Tips For Choosing a Rug

When choosing a rug for your room, you will want to match colors to your other furniture as well as your wall color and lighting scheme. Be sure that at least two of the colors in the rug match the other colors in the room. Next, think about the room as a whole. Where is the focal point? If you want the rug to be the focal point, consider one with a strong central draw such as a medallion. If the room already has another focal point, choose a rug that will not detract from it. Consider also the other patterns in the room and how they will interact with the rug. What about your wallpaper and the designs in the furniture upholstery? Make sure these won't clash with the addition of a new rug by taking samples with you when you shop for the rug. Also consider the style of the rug. Some rooms, such as more traditionally styled rooms with antiques, will look better with an Oriental rug than others. Choose a more colorful, braided rug for a more modern looking room. Color too, will be important in the overall feel of the room. The general rule of thumb applies here too: lighter colors add space while darker colors add intimacy.

As for rug size, a general tip is to leave about eight to ten inches of wood showing around the edges.
